Robert Slatkoff showed his new photographic works at the Skelly Gallery, April 3rd to 30th, 2011.“My work is changing in surprising ways. It has become more abstract and seems to be coming from a deeper part of myself. I feel like an archaeologist who is discovering another reality. I am impatient to see where I will be led..." Over the years Slatkoff has developed a unique style. His way of transforming common objects and places is sometimes disturbing. The new work is a radical change from both a technical and conceptual point of view. He has abandoned traditional darkroom practices and now uses digital techniques from capture to final printing. The digital process permits incredible freedom. Density, contrast and colour can now be altered to produce results which were previously difficult and even impossible. “ It is a blessing to be able to do things which were previously unthinkable” The new works are larger in format ( up to 23 x 35 ins ) and they inhabit a space situated between painting and photography where the realistic elements keep a fine balance with abstract painterly colour fields Born in Montreal in 1938 Slatkoff has two visually oriented careers. He is a practising radiologist and has been an exhibiting artist-photographer since 1968. His work has been exhibited in Montreal and across Canada and is represented in the permanent collection of the Canadian Art Bank and the Musée d’art Contemporain of Montreal. “Photographing has become a way of life for me and I constantly search for a meaning which is hidden within what we perceive as reality. I know deeply that there is a mysterious dimension to everything, and it has become my mission to be aware of it. Slatkoff a developpé, à travers les années, une style bien particulier. Sa façon d’agencer les objets ordinaires et d’interpréter des lieux banals est parfois déroutante. On remarque d’ailleurs dans cette nouvelle production photographique un changement radical, tant dans la conception technique de l’image que dans la forme des sujets qu’il explore.La notamment abandonné les procédés de la chambre noire traditionnelle et il utilise maintenant les techniques numériques, de la prise de vue jusqu’au tirage photographique finale. Ce virage technologique lui permet une incroyable liberté. Il peut ainsi manipuler la densité, le contraste et la couleur, ce qui lui était précédemment difficile et souvent impossible. “C’est une bénédiction de pouvoir réaliser des choses dont on ne pouvait que rêver auparavant.
Les nouvelles oeuvres sont présentées dans un format plus grand (23 po x 35 po) et elles se situent visuellement entre la peinture et la photographie où les éléments réalistes sont en balance avec les “ champs abstraits” de la couleur.
Né a Montréal en 1938, Robert Slatkoff mène simultanément deux carrières à caractèr visuel : il est à la fois médecin – radiologiste et artiste – photographe. Il expose ses oeuvres depuis 1968.
Il a eu plusieurs expositions à Montréal et à travers le Canada. Quelques-unes de ses oeuvres font maintenant partie de la collection de la Banque d’oeuvres d’art du Canada et du Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.
"Photographier est devenu un mode de vie pour moi. Je suis constamment à la recherche d’un autre sens caché à la limite de ce que nous perçevons comme réalité. Je sais profondément qu’il y a une autre dimension mystérieuse à toute chose et c’est devenu ma mission d’en être conscient. En créant une image photographique, je prouve à moi-même que cette dimension existe.
